A Celebration of Rock and Roll's Jewish Heritage
An author lecture like no other.
Join authors Janet Macoska and Rabbi Brian Leiken for a multimedia "rockumentary" journey into the lives of world renown rock legends as they reveal behind the scenes anecdotes of the Jewish influences along their rise to stardom.

Rock and Roll as an art form matters.
Being Jewish in rock and roll matters.
Music has been an essential part of Judaism since Moses sang a song of thanks to God for leading the Hebrews out of Egypt.  The power and importance of music are extolled throughout the Torah.

A great deal is known about the contributions of Jewish actors, comedians, sports heroes, politicians and others.  More than 60 years after the birth of rock and roll, the importance of Jews in the evolution and popularity of this genre of contemporary music is a joyous discovery that deserves recognition.

Behind the Lens
with Janet Macoska
After 30+ years photographing musicians and concerts, sometimes I think I’ve seen and heard it all.  I haven’t, and I’m glad of that.  Matisyahu’s concert was fascinating. Here was this young Hasidic Jew onstage performing his unique blend of reggae and hip hop to a young ecstatic audience.  It was a rock and roll devotional.

If rock and roll has been the soundtrack of your life, photojournalist Janet Macoska has provided the visuals.  Since 1974, Janet Macoska has been capturing rock’s greatest on film.  Among the publications who have used her photos are Rolling Stone, People, US, Vogue, American Photo, Creem, 16, Teen Beat, NY Times, and London Times . VH1 regularly uses Macoska’s vast rock archive in their “rockumentaries.”  Her work is in the permanent collection of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, The National Portrait Gallery in London and in Hard Rock Café’s all around the planet.  David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and The Kinks are just some of the artists who have used her work on their cds. Janet has developed stories for and worked on assignment with a myriad of music and entertainment publications, artists and managements, record companies, television programs and motion pictures including The OH in Ohio, Miracle at Midnight, Night of the Twisters, Telling Lies in America, Back to the Beach, Northshore, Light of Day, Home Improvement, Boy Meets World, Blossom, Baywatch, and Beverly Hills 90210. Janet is currently Brand Manager for Ray Charles Marketing Group and photographer for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Cleveland, Ohio.
Brian Leiken is a Rabbi at Temple Shalom in Norwalk, CT.  He graduated from Brandeis University with a B.A. in Sociology in 1998 and was ordained by the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 2007.  Prior to being ordained, Rabbi Leiken worked for five years as a Legislative Associate at both the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism and Public Campaign, two non-profit advocacy organizations based in Washington D.C., where he worked alongside such musical social justice advocates as Peter Yarrow and David Crosby.  Rabbi Leiken grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, the home of Rock and Roll, and became a music fan early in life.  His enthusiasm for music and Judaism led him to organize a concert in March of 2008, which was entitled Rock of David and celebrated the accomplishments of Jews in Rock and Roll.  Rabbi Leiken has written articles for both the Connecticut Jewish Ledger and the Cleveland Jewish News and is currently working on a book about faith and rationalism.

In his discussion on Jews in Rock and Roll, Rabbi Leiken explores the role of music in the Jewish tradition, the early history of Jewish song-writing in the United States, the unique Jewish backgrounds of a variety of Jewish Rock and Roll performers, and the ways in which Judaism is now embraced by a variety of popular Jewish musicians.
